Adjectives (Přídavná jména)

Adjectives describe nouns. In Czech, they must agree with the noun they modify in:

  1. Gender
  2. Number
  3. Case

Position

Adjectives usually come before the noun.

  • Dobrý den. (Good day.)
  • Velké mÄ›sto. (Big city.)

If they come after the noun, it is usually for poetic emphasis or in specific scientific classifications (kyselina sírová - sulfuric acid).

Types

There are two main types of adjectives based on their ending in the dictionary form (Nominative Singular Masculine):

  1. Hard: Ends in -ý (mladý).
  2. Soft: Ends in -í (jarní).
