The Vocative Case (5. pád)

The Vocative is the case of direct address - used when calling someone or speaking directly to them.


What is the Vocative?

The vocative answers the question: Oslovení! (Addressing!)

Use vocative when you're:

  • Calling someone by name
  • Addressing someone directly
  • Getting someone's attention

When to Use Vocative

Direct Address

Petře, pojď sem!
(Peter, come here!)

Mami, kde jsi?
(Mom, where are you?)

Pane učiteli, mám otázku.
(Teacher, I have a question.)

Greetings and Exclamations

Ahoj, Honzo!
(Hi, Honza!)

Bože můj!
(My God!)

Milá Eliško, ...
(Dear Eliška, ...)

Important Notes

Vocative is Singular Only!

In modern Czech, vocative forms exist only for singular nouns. For plurals, just use nominative: Studenti, pojďte sem!

Formal vs. Informal

Vocative is more common in:

  • Formal speech (Pane doktore!)
  • Written letters (Milá Jano,)
  • Emotional expressions (Bože!)

In casual speech, many Czechs use nominative instead.
