Memory Tricks for the Locative
Use these mnemonics to remember Locative patterns more easily.
V vs Na: The Golden Rules
"When in doubt, use V"
V is the default. It covers ~80% of locations. Only switch to na when you KNOW the word requires it.
EVENTS need NA 🎭
"You go TO (na) events, not IN (v) them"
Think about it: you don't go inside a concert, you go to it.
- na koncertě (at a concert)
- na svatbě (at a wedding)
- na přednášce (at a lecture)
Memory phrase: "NA the party!"
TRANSPORT uses NA 🚂
"NA-vigating to stations"
Transport hubs where things arrive and depart use NA:
- na nádraží (at the station)
- na letišti (at the airport)
- na zastávce (at the stop)
Memory phrase: "NA-draží, NA-letiště, NA-stávka" - they all start with NA!
ISLANDS use NA 🏝️
"You land ON an island"
Islands are surfaces you land ON, not containers you go IN:
- na Kubě
- na Islandu
- na Sicílii
Memory phrase: "NA island, you land!"
INSTITUTIONS use NA 🏛️
"NA-stitutions"
Places where you deal with bureaucracy:
- na univerzitě
- na poště
- na policii
- na úřadě
Memory phrase: "NA-iversity, NA-post office"
Palatalization Rhymes
K → C
"K becomes C before E"
- ruka → v ruce
- matka → o matce
- rok → v roce
Rhyme: "K to C, that's the key!"
H → Z
"H becomes Z, Praze says"
- Praha → v Praze
- kniha → o knize
- noha → na noze
Rhyme: "Prague-Z, book-Z, leg-Z - H to Z!"
CH → Š
"CH to Š, the roof shows"
- střecha → na střeše
- moucha → o mouše
Rhyme: "CHange to Š!"
R → Ř
"R gets a háček for sisters and daughters"
- sestra → o sestře
- dcera → o dceři
Rhyme: "R to Ř, the háček is there!"
Ending Patterns
Masculine Animate: The "-OVI Club"
"Tell me about him-OVI"
When talking ABOUT people, use -ovi:
- o bratrovi
- o studentovi
- o Petrovi
Memory: "Who? Him-OVI!"
Feminine -A → -E/-Ě
"A becomes E for her"
- žena → o ženě
- škola → ve škole
Memory: "She changes A to E!"
Neuter -O → -Ě/-E
"O becomes Ě in the middle"
- město → ve městě
- kino → v kině
Memory: "In the middle (neuter), O to Ě!"
The -Í Exception
"Words ending in -Í stay lazy"
Neuter nouns ending in -í DON'T change:
- nádraží → na nádraží
- náměstí → na náměstí
Memory: "-Í words are lazy, they stay the same!"
Plural Patterns
The "-CH Club"
"All plurals end in CH"
- -ech (hard masculine, some neuter)
- -ách (hard feminine)
- -ích (soft everything)
Memory: "Welcome to the CH club - all plurals allowed!"
Hard vs Soft Plurals
"Hard gets ECH/ÁCH, Soft gets ÍCH"

Tricky Na-Words Acronym
The BATHROOM LIST
For the most common irregular na-words, remember BATHROOM:
- Bathroom (záchod) → na záchodě
- Apartment complex (kolej - dorm) → na koleji
- Town square (náměstí) → na náměstí
- Hills/countryside (venkov) → na venkově
- Ruins/castle (hrad) → na hradě
- Outdoor market (trh) → na trhu
- Open cottage (chata) → na chatě
- Mountains (hory) → na horách
The "Surface Test"
Is it a SURFACE or a CONTAINER?
When unsure about v/na, ask yourself:
"Am I ON it or IN it?"

All cardinal directions use NA:
- na severu (north)
- na jihu (south)
- na východě (east)
- na západě (west)
Memory: "Which way? NA way!"

Imagine a BOX:
- Inside the box = V
- On top of the box = NA
- Written on the outside = O (about)
The Event Ticket
When you buy a ticket, it says "NA":
- NA koncert

- NA svatbu
