V vs Na: The Critical Distinction

This is the #1 struggle for Czech learners. When do you use v (in) and when do you use na (on/at)?

The Golden Rule

Default to V

When in doubt, use v. It works for ~80% of locations. Only use na when you know the word requires it.

  • v restauraci (in the restaurant)
  • v obchodě (in the shop)

Containers & Enclosed Spaces

  • v autě (in the car)
  • v krabici (in the box)
  • v tašce (in the bag)

When to Use NA (Memorize These!)

1. Events & Activities 🎭

If you're attending something, use na:

Memory trick: If you can say "I'm attending..." in English, use na in Czech.

2. Transportation Places 🚂

Stations, stops, and airports use na:

Common Mistakes

Watch Out!

❌ v záchodě = literally "inside the toilet bowl" 🚽

✅ na záchodě = in the bathroom/restroom


❌ v koncertě = inside the concert (?)

✅ na koncertě = at the concert


❌ v severu = in the north (wrong)

✅ na severu = in the north
