Conditional Mood (Podmiňovacà způsob)
The conditional corresponds to the English "would". It is used for hypothetical situations and polite requests.
Visual Overview
Formation
It is formed very similarly to the Past Tense: L-participle + Conditional Auxiliary (bych).
| Person | Auxiliary | Main Verb (Masc.) | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Já | bych | dělal | I would do |
| Ty | bys | dělal | You would do |
| On | by | dělal | He would do |
| My | bychom | dělali | We would do |
| Vy | byste | dělali | You would do |
| Oni | by | dělali | They would do |
Warning: Many native speakers incorrectly say "by jsme" instead of "bychom". In formal writing, always use bychom.
Uses
- Hypotheticals: Kdybych mÄ›l penÃze, koupil bych si auto. (If I had money, I would buy a car.)
- Polite Requests: Chtěl bych pivo. (I would like a beer.)
- Advice: Měl bys to udělat. (You should do it - lit. "You would have to do it".)
Past Conditional
"I would have done it."
- Byl bych to udělal. (Rarely used in modern spoken Czech, usually replaced by simple conditional).
