The Perfectivization Pattern

Most prefixes make imperfective verbs perfective:

  2. napsat (write completely) - perfective
  3. napsovat (write repeatedly) - secondary imperfective

This three-step pattern is very common in Czech!

Many prefixes have multiple meanings depending on context:

vy- can mean:

  • Out: vyjít (go out)
  • Thoroughly: vyčistit (clean thoroughly)
  • Result: vypít (drink up)
