Po & Při with the Locative

Beyond v, na, and o, two more prepositions take the Locative case: po and při.

Po (after, along, around)

Po has several meanings, all requiring the Locative:

1. After (time)

Czech	English
po obědě	after lunch
po práci	after work
po škole	after school
po snídani	after breakfast
po večeři	after dinner
po hodině	after an hour
po roce	after a year
po válce	after the war

Examples:

• Sejdeme se po obědě. — We'll meet after lunch.
• Co děláš po práci? — What do you do after work?
• Po škole jdu domů. — After school I go home.

2. Along, around (movement/location)

po ulici	along the street
po městě	around the city
po parku	around the park
po bytě	around the apartment
po celém světě	around the whole world
po schodech	up/down the stairs

Examples:

• Procházíme se po parku. — We're walking around the park.
• Běžel po ulici. — He ran along the street.
• Cestuje po Evropě. — She's traveling around Europe.
• Šel po schodech. — He went up/down the stairs.

3. Throughout, all over

po celém domě	throughout the house
po celé zemi	across the country
po těle	all over the body

Examples:

• Hledal jsem po celém domě. — I searched throughout the house.
• Bolí mě po celém těle. — It hurts all over my body.

Při (at, during, by)

Při indicates proximity or simultaneity:

1. During, while (doing something)

Examples:

• Nemluv při jídle! — Don't talk while eating!

2. At, by (location/proximity)

Examples:

• Seděl při okně. — He sat by the window.
• Mám to při ruce. — I have it at hand.

3. On the occasion of

• Při té příležitosti řekl... — On that occasion he said...
• Poznali se při oslavě. — They met at a celebration.
